Chemistry students compete to be 'Top of the Bench'

Four chemistry students from Year 9, 10 and 11 accompanied Mr Hodgson to the University of Bristol labs as part of Royal Society of Chemistry’s ‘Top of the Bench’ competition.

With an eye on securing the next generation of talented chemical scientists, the competition aims to enthuse and excite children with chemistry and encourage them to consider the topic in their further education and careers.

Competing against several other schools from around Bristol the students were given two tasks to complete safely and accurately. They were judged on their scientific method and ability to think quickly and work as a team. The teams completed all tasks with accuracy and were in a strong position going into the final judging, but unfortunately just missed out.

They were treated to an explosive end of the day, with some excellent demonstrations looking at where chemistry meets physics and biology.

Many thanks to the Royal Society of Chemistry and University of Bristol and to Mrs Ivey for helping to organise the team.
