4 girls teams take on Backwell girls at hockey and netball

Year 7

In their 2nd fixture for St Kath’s the girls showed excellent composure on the ball, on a difficult playing surface.  With Chloe Weaden playing as a sweeper, she was instrumental in keeping the Backwell attack away from goal.  Jolie Breakwell played well in the middle alongside Izzy Prime, with good distribution to the attack Molly Green and Hetty Cleaver.  Despite their hard work, the Backwell attack were strong and managed to convert one of their attacking chances into the only goal of the game, giving them a narrow victory by 1 – 0.  Despite the result, the St Kath’s side showed strength in their play and Ella Leakey, Sophie Weaden and Ellie Ojo performed well in their debut games. Player of the match was voted as Ellie Ojo.

Year 10 Netball

St Kath’s 14 – 11 Backwell

Having suffered a narrow defeat in their last game against Gordano, the girls were keen to get to winning ways in this fixture against Backwell.  Another huge school, with a massive amount of girls to choose from it was always going to be a tough test and in the 1st quarter the girls were left at the start line, by a Backwell side that quickly got into their tactics and strategies and took an early lead.

In the 2nd quarter the St Kath’s girls switched on, with Leesha Coleman and Abbie Mogg solid in defence, providing more opportunities for shooters Bo Marshall and Lauren Dun.  Although they didn’t take the lead in this quarter, they close the gap in the overall score and were much more positive in their play.

With an injury to Lexie in C position, Georgia Bennett filled the gap well and the girls continued with their positive play, Louise Thomas linked well with the attack and Hannah Chapman made some important defensive inceptions allowing more possession and consequently more goals to the St Kath’s side.

Entering the final quarter, the St Kath’s side had the edge and began to pull away from the Backwell side, using their skill to good effect.  The final score was 14 – 11 to St Kath’s and the player of the match was voted as Georgia Bennett.

Year 11 Netball

St Kath’s 8 – 18 Backwell

Having played Backwell 4 times previously, the girls knew they were in for a tough battle and that is exactly what they got.  In a close contact game, the ball was end to end, and both teams battled well to contest possession. Athea Heavens performed well in defence, alongside Freya Gorely, however despite their best efforts, the amount of possession the Backwell shooters received; it was inevitable that they would begin to take a lead.

In the 2nd half a change of positions and an the introduction of Ashleigh Wills sparked some periods of really positive play, giving the St Kath’s shooters of Maddie Watts and Morgan McDonnell the opportunity to get on the score sheet.  The game ended in an 18 – 8 Backwell victory and the St Kath’s player of the match was voted as Freya Gorley.
