Girls Hockey v Gordano

Key stage 3 girls face local rivals Gordano on the hockey pitch

Tuesday 24th January

Year 7

St Katherine’s 0 – 1 Gordano

For both sides this game was more about coaching and allowing the players to get a feel of a competitive match.  After an initial period of play in which both teams surrounded the ball and as a result the play became very congested, both teams found the space the pitch provided and began to move the ball around with more pace.  Leah Rudolph was able to provide an attacking option for the St Kath’s side and provided a number of opportunities, however the Gordano side had great pace and control upfront, despite the defence of the St Kath’s side were able to score the only goal of the game.  Despite the result, the St Kath’s side showed great promise and potential and they look forward to their game next week against Backwell.  Player of the match was voted as Isobel Taylor.

Year 8

St Katherine’s 0 – 4 Gordano

For the first game of the season, on a cold January evening, the Year 8 girls showed resilience and grit throughout.  Molly, Andia and Chantelle orchestrated play and moved the ball with speed from defence and midfield out wide to our midfielders, Grace and Leah. Although there Gordano scored 3 goals in the first half, if it hadn’t had been for Beth in goal making some incredible saves and clearing the ball to the side, the score line might have been very different. As time went on, what St Katherine’s’ were doing was working together as a team, growing in confidence, while the ball pace was improving. One particularly great piece of play started with Andia l in defence, to Grace in midfield who played a great ball to Amelie who made a fantastic cross across the ‘D’ Freya.

With the ball moving around so well up between defence and midfield, and some lovely support play, the score line did not reflect the team effort that was displayed throughout the match. Congratulations must go to Amelie Purvis, who was awarded players’ player by Gordano.

Year 9

St Kath’s 0 – 4 Gordano

In their first game playing 11 aside the girls did well to face a well drilled and practiced Gordano side.  Increasing number at training from 8 in 2016 to 13 in 2017 has been a massive improvement and shown a great level of enthusiasm and commitment from the Year 9 girls.  Defensively, the girls were tested frequently and for long periods of the game, under pressure from the strong Gordano attack, however Izzy Fielden put in a number of tackles to halt the opposition’s progress, supported by Maisy Atkins and Grace Brown.  Ruby Webber made a number of saves, but it was inevitable that the number of attacks by Gordano would result in goals scored.

Further up the pitch, the midfield of Lucie Robertshaw, Jazzy Pither, Stella Croker and Ellie McCarthy linked well to bring the ball out of defence and into attack for Zerin Akbayir, Ellie McIntyre and Lois Scanlan to take advantage of.

Although no goals were scored by the St Kath’s side, there were long periods of possession and lots of positives to take from the game.
