U13 Girls Outdoor Cricket

Girls smash opposition total & head for next round of Lady Taverners competition

In glorious weather, in probably one of the most picturesque settings, with Glastonbury Tor in the backdrop of the Glastonbury Cricket club, the U13 girls team from St Katherine’s, faced their first opponents in this summer competition.

With attendance to club good, the 10 person strong  squad travelled down to Somerset with the assumption that they would be playing 2 games, however with one of the teams withdrawing at the last minute, it was a must win game for the first time representatives of St Kath’s.

Winning the toss, captain, Chloe Weaden chose to field first and in fact opened the bowling fir the St Kath’s side.  Bowling well she gave little away and also with great length to her deliveries, gave almost nothing for the Wells Blue side to play off.  She was followed by Isobel Taylor, Sophie Weaden and Daisy Money who all managed to keep the run rate low.  Lucy Turner was kept busy as wicket keeper and was well backed up by Annie Lou Brookfield and Leah Porter and Ella Leakey made some important stops on the boundary as the Wells Blue batters grew in confidence.  Their innings finished as 42 – 6 and the St Kath’s side changed over.

Opening the batting was Isobel and Chloe, the first couple of overs were relatively slow, but the run rate slowly ticked over and after a flurry of great strikes and a couple of boundaries the girls had already surpassed the Wells Blue total within 4 overs.

Having won the game, the decision was made to retire the batters, to give all the girls the chance to face some balls, Maya Matthews and Beth Edwards made an immediate impact striking a number of 4’s and 6’s and the St Kath’s total continued to rise, the rest of the team also added runs and the final score finished at 86 – 2, a convincing victory for the St Kath’s girls.
