Term 6 Newsletter

July 2018

Message from the Head of School

We have made further progress this term on improving the climate for learning across the school as we continue to raise standards. This is a key part of our School Quality Improvement Plan: Strand 3 – ‘Establish an effective climate for learning to enable all learners to make rapid progress’.

Our new ‘Ready to Learn’ system focuses on ensuring all pupils can make maximum progress in disruption free classrooms. Pupils have responded extremely well so far to the three clear expectations for all pupils: Be responsible by arriving on time and fully equipped; Be respectful by listening and speaking politely; Be resilient by remaining on task and working hard.

Praise is at the heart of our ‘Ready to Learn’ system and we recognise pupils for living and breathing our values: Acceptance, Respect, Honesty, Determination, Equality, Excellence, Friendship, Aspiration, Resilience and Responsibility. It is testament to our young people that we have already awarded an astonishing 28000 praise points this term including over 270 Praise Postcards. This is a reflection on the wonderful young people we work with day in, day out.

Our Pupil Behaviour Policy has been updated to incorporate ‘Ready to Learn’. Should you have any questions about the updated policy, please contact Hayden Southon, Deputy Headteacher.

Class Charts: From September we are introducing Class Charts, a new homework and Ready to Learn recording platform that will replace Show My Homework and the Parent Portal. It is an intuitive system which can be accessed via the web or an app to allow parents/carers to easily access important information about their child all in one place. Full details will be issued during the first week of the new term. We will also provide hands-on assistance at the Parent/Carer Information evenings throughout September (see dates below)

Our new House structure was launched this week, creating a real buzz across the school. The passion and ‘family’ atmosphere in the launch assemblies showed us a glimpse of what is to come in 2018/19. We are very excited with our new structure and many pupils are talking about which position they are going to apply for within their house. Please discuss this with your son/daughter. Application details are in their email inbox.

2017/18 has been another great year for St Katherine’s. We look forward to celebrating with our young people in August.

Wishing everyone a restful summer break.

Mr Humphreys

    New Trust arrangements

This term we have been working with the Cathedral Schools Trust (CST) to put the foundations in place for St Katherine’s transition to CST as part of our new trust arrangements.

The Senior Leadership Team and School Governors have had several positive and productive meetings with  Neil Blundell, CST’s Chief Executive Officer and his colleagues.  It will take a little while to finalise the  transition arrangements however we expect this to officially become part of CST in December.

This is an exciting opportunity for St Katherine’s at a time when we are making many positive changes for our future. We’ll  keep parents and carers updated as arrangements are finalised next term.

    Mr Humphreys, Head of School

    Sixth Form update

This term we welcomed future sixth formers with our annual Step into Sixth Form day. During the day the students attended lessons in subjects they have applied to study and found out more about what St Katherine’s offers to sixth formers including the new Wednesday afternoon enrichment slot, where students can pursue an interest outside the post-16 curriculum.

To help sixth formers prepare for their future careers, leaders from PriceWaterhouseCooper and Lloyds Bank joined students during activities week for coaching in CV writing, how to make a good impression at interview and approach interview assessment tasks. The student

Students were asked to ‘dress to impress’ garnering praise from the Lloyds staff for their personal presentation and effort during the day.

The students also tested their communication and team skills in a group baking task and rounded off the week with a surfing trip to Westward Ho! Designed to encourage them to step out of their comfort zone.

      SAVE THE DATE:

Our Sixth Form Open Evening for 2019 intake is on Thursday 22 November.

It’s a great opportunity for Year 11 to find out more about St Katherine’s Sixth Form and find out about Sixth Form life from teachers and students. More details will follow in September.

After our first term ashead students, we have already grasped the big responsibilities coming our way for the next year. Seeing the support from our peers in sixth form and lower down the school has been really motivating and we cannot wait to implement our ideas in the coming year. We have already formed a solid Leadership Team with a membership of nearly 20 sixth form students.

We have all agreed that we want the years to mix a lot more next year so the new year sevens can have older buddies to look up to and ask about what is yet to come. Furthermore, we aim to merge the two sixth form years more so that we can act as a collective rather than a divided group.

Prom is already in the making and we’ve been to visit locations and get provisional dates booked so the new sixth formers have something to look forward to!

We cannot thank the students and teachers enough for the support they have provided thus far and we hope to live up to the expectations.

In the meantime we’d like to wish all students and staff a great summer break.

      Lewis Mason and Eloise Wheeler

      Keep safe this summer

      Keeping safe online:

Despite the distractions of the summer holiday it’s likely students will be on their phones, tablets and PCs a fair amount so it’s a good time for parents and carers to talk to their children about being safe online.

There’s a lot of information for parents and carers out there and it can be difficult to know where to start.  So here are a few links to useful sites to help inform yourself about online safety and tips for discussing it positively with your child:

      YouTube:

Many children enjoying using YouTube to watch and/or make their own videos.  This useful article provides more information about keeping safe using this website and app

      Mental Health awareness:

The sun doesn’t always shine for the young people who experience mental health difficulties. These websites offer advice on how you can spot the signs of someone struggling with their mental health, how you can support them and where to find help:

Student pen ‘Half Full’ musical to promote inclusion and acceptance

In the late June, a sold out Wickham Theatre in Clifton was the venue for the first public performance of ‘Half Full’,  the student-led LGBT+ musical, written by year 10 students Will Want and Wren Talbot-Ponsonby.

The musical, which follows the blossoming relationship between Obelisk (played by Rosa Thomson) and Erin (Stephanie Thomasset) over the course of a detention, was at once genuinely touching and hilarious, whilst conveying a potent, inclusive message.

Having performed Half Full to fellow students in school last year, months of hard work came to fruition at the Wickham, as friends, parents and the general public were bowled over by this exceptional project. Huge thanks are due to Bristol University and Bristol Old Vic for helping to make the show a reality, but the credit really must fall to the remarkable talent of these young people, who truly shone.

      Mr Davies, Teacher of English

      Insight into Philosophy Club

Twenty-five students were challenged to debate key philosophical questions as part of our Insight into Philosophy club run in conjunction with Bristol University.  Led by Post-Graduate student Tina Williams, the programme covered several ancient and modern philosophical thought experiments including the  ‘The Ship of Theseus’, which led to interesting questions about personal identity and the ‘Positive Experience Machine’, which asks us if we would wear a headset that gave us permanent happiness.

Throughout the programme the students debated and consider a number of questions about identity, happiness and freedom & responsibility  including: ‘Am I the same person as when I was a baby?’ ‘Can anything ever stay the same?’ ‘Is real happiness more valuable?’   ‘What is happiness?’ ‘Is it right that our freedom be limited so that we behave better?’  ‘What’s more important: freedom or the greater good?’ ‘How could we organise society to make it fair for all?’  ‘Do we always choose what we think will be best for ourselves?’

The level of student discussion was exceptional and it was heartening to see young people discussing philosophy in such a passionate way.   The programme culminated in a philosophy lecture and graduation at Bristol University where the efforts and contribution of St Katherine’s students were praised.

The club was oversubscribed so we’ll be running it again next year with a brand new set of problems.

Mr Murdoch, Head of Philosophy and Belief.

      Term 6 news round-up

Here’s a quick round up of more student successes and the Paris and Madrid trips

      TT Rockstars fly high!
      Image

Three Year 7 students  enjoyed a thrilling helicopter flight after coming out champions in a regional times table completion.

Kanye Christie, Ahmed Mahamud and Ryan Bundy took part in the regional ‘Rock Wrangle’ event organised by Times Table Rock Stars.

Kanye performed particularly well, beating 75 students in the head to head elimination rounds to make his way to the grand final. He came out as ultimate champion after answering an incredible 393 multiplication questions in just three minutes.

After the awards ceremony Kanye and his team mates stepped straight onto their prize, an exclusive helicopter flight over Bristol which included a special flypast of St Katherine’s.

      Success in UK maths challenge

Congratulations to the Year 7 & 8 students who achieved Gold, Silver and Bronze awards in the recent UK Mathematics Trust Junior Maths Challenge.

Out of the 300,000 students taking part nationally, only 40% achieve this recognition with less than 7% landing a Gold award.

We are delighted that 12 students achieved Silver awards and another 12 scooped the Bronze.

Meanwhile, our Gold award winners Harry Hodson (Year 8) and Adam Britton (Year 7) performed exceptionally well and are part of the top 3% students nationally who were invited to the next stage – the Kangaroo Challenge.

      Well done everyone!

Meanwhile the Year 9s experienced a variety of Madrid’s treats including a visit to Palacio Real, Retiro Parc and a day trip to Parque Warne.

They also indulged in that fabulous Spanish treat – churros!

Meanwhile back at home students enjoyed trips to the Snowdome, the Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare, Thorpe Park, Brean and West Midlands Safari Park.

Year 9 students create mural for local community
      Image

A group of Year 9 students joined forces with Bristol graffiti artist Rob Wheeler (‘Graft’) to create an eye-catching mural for our local community of Pill.

Rob, who used to work as an Art and Design teacher at St Katherine’s, approached the school with a proposal for a graffiti art project to design the mural.   Inspired by his interest in the history of the local area and Pill’s maritime heritage Rob suggested a design based on the William Morris ‘Avon Chintz’ pattern.  Working with the students he adapted the design to incorporate maritime images such as ships, tidal currents and oar heads.

Firstly, Rob did a workshop with the students in school teaching them some basic spraypainting techniques and how to create their own ‘tags’ and spray stencils.  They then spent a day on site using their new spray skills to fill in the mural outline Rob had created. Rob then returned the next day to add the final details.

Special thanks to Rob for this fantastic project and congratulations to students Edith Powell, Judit Molnar, Bethia Brown, Fergus Creton,  Annika Rugman, Jimmy Church and Grace Newby for their hard work and commitment.
