We know that the step up from primary to secondary school can be a time of anxiety for many students (and parents and carers!) so we make every effort to ensure that starting at St Katherine’s is a smooth, happy experience. We would like to reassure all parents and carers of current Year 6 students due to join us in September that we are continuing to work very hard to ensure that their transition is as smooth as possible. However, given the present circumstances, we have had to change the way we are supporting our new students and their families.
Our Transition Manager is Mrs Julie Ball, who is highly experienced both with transition and Year 7. Mrs Ball visits new pupils in their primary schools from around Easter time. Along with meeting new pupils she discusses each child with their Year 6 teacher and/or key member of staff. This year, we have gathered information on children using online forms, telephone calls and limited school visits in place of the wide-ranging visits we would normally undertake.
For pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, Mrs Flora Slater, our SENDCO, will visit the school along with Mrs Ball. We hold additional transitional visits for all pupils with special educational needs or who will need additional support to secure a smooth transition. This will include discrete induction sessions at St Katherine’s.
Under normal circumstances, we would have invited Year 6 students to school during Term Six to experience some lessons, meet their tutor, meet other students and begin acclimatising to their new environment, we would also have hosted our popular welcome BBQ. Instead, we welcomed children and their parents/ carers in a new and exciting way to our Virtual Transition Evening on Wednesday 30th June. The evening included a welcome from Mr Humphreys, introductions from key staff, an opportunity to meet both tutor and the rest of the tutor group along with a question and answer session. Please see below for the recorded presentations.
For more information about starting at St Katherine’s please see our Year 7 Parent and Carer Information Handbook.
At St Katherine's we place a real emphasis on the value of reading, it's really important that students continue reading over the summer holidays. Ms Wyld, our librarian, has created the Year 7 Transition Reading Leaflet which includes lots of suggestions for new titles to try and further information is available on the Library Resource Centre page on our website.
Please see the presentation slides or the recording of the Virtual Transition Evening if you missed the event. We have also put together some short videos to welcome you to our houses: Pankhurst, Stephenson, Turing and Yousafzai, we hope you enjoy them and we look forward to meeting you all soon.
