  Term 1 - October 2025
  Message from Mr Humphreys, Headteacher

As we reach the end of Term 1, it has been a pleasure to see our students so engaged, ambitious and full of energy. The first seven weeks have set a really positive tone for the year ahead. Here are some highlights…

A Strong Start

We began the term by celebrating our fantastic A Level and GCSE results, recognising the hard work and resilience behind them. In our first assemblies, students reflected on the ingredients of success - attendance, reading, aspiration, resilience - and each set themselves a small 1% change to build stronger habits this year.

House assemblies have focused on punctuality, responsibility and safeguarding - simple but vital messages that shape how we learn and look after one another. We also celebrated World Afro Day, promoting pride and understanding of Afro-textured hair and the importance of respect for all identities.

Learning and Achievement

Our classrooms have been full of focus and determination. Year 8 completed their first full Assessment Week, showing calm, preparation and resilience - ‘success without stress’ has been our message. Year 9 began their own assessment journey, exploring effective revision techniques and how to make learning stick.

Year 10 launched their work experience search, learning how to contact employers and explore future careers. It’s been great to see so many already securing exciting placements.

In the Sixth Form, Year 12 and 13 took part in a Study Skills Day and a successful Parent/Carer Information Evening. A talk from Jessie Leung, Chartered Surveyor, broadened horizons about careers in construction, while Year 13 biologists brought their learning to life at We The Curious in Bristol. Year 9 also enjoyed an inspiring field trip to Folly Farm, combining teamwork and ecology in the great outdoors.

Community and Connection

Our Year 7 Meet the Tutor Evening was a real highlight. Families had the chance to visit tutor rooms, see students’ work and hear from Mr Bradshaw about the great start this year group has made. Students’ pride in their books and learning was clear to see.

We also welcomed Year 11 families for an informative Revision and Success Evening, led by Mr Sugden and supported by our core Heads of Faculty. The evening was packed with practical tips and encouragement for supporting revision at home. His “POMs” - from the Pomodoro concept - has already become a talking point among students! The focus was on practical strategies and how parents can support effective revision at home.

Beyond the Classroom

Our Sports Awards Evening was a brilliant celebration of talent and teamwork. Congratulations to Heidi Martineau (Sportswoman of the Year) and Oscar Warren (Sportsman of the Year), and to all nominees for an inspiring evening that truly showed sport is in our DNA.

Outdoor education remains a cornerstone of life at St Katherine’s. 7Y1 and 7S conquered Sugar Loaf (596m), Year 9 families attended our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh information evening, and Year 13 students completed their Gold qualifying expedition - outstanding achievements of resilience and teamwork.

As Term 1 draws to a close, I want to thank you for your continued encouragement and partnership. Together - home, school and students - we have built a purposeful and positive start to the year.

I wish all our families a restful and happy half term break.

Warm regards,

Justin Humphreys, Headteacher

Summer expedition to Nepal

Nepal was a wonderful trip - the students had the opportunity to work with the Pahar trust, painting a school building and helping with the construction of a new block. We saw wonderful history and architecture in Kathmandu and Pokhara and we then completed a five day trek in the Annapurna range of the Himalayas, amongst the most breathtaking scenery on earth.

7Y1 Sugar Loaf

The year kicked off with 7Y1’s attempt to scale Sugar Loaf. Despite a grim forecast, we dodged massive rain clouds and reached the top for lunch out of the wind. The team showed great resilience and courage in climbing to the top.

7S Sugar Loaf Trip

Well done to all the adventurers from Stephenson who climbed up to the top! It was a cold but clear day and they enjoyed exploring ancient forests and scrambling over rocks. All the tutor group should be very proud of themselves!

Gold D of E

Four participants in the Gold D of E Award completed their expedition in Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). Starting on the outskirts of Bala, the team trekked over a wide range of wild terrain, following dramatic ridge lines above huge valleys before summiting Cader Idris. The team finished in Barmouth, walking across the stunning railway bridge, just as the rain and wind from Storm Amy was building. For the participants, completing this led them one step closer to finishing their award, the end of months of volunteering, physical work and other activities. Well done to the team and thank you to Matt from Young Bristol for helping keep them safe!

We've had a hugely enjoyable time welcoming Year 6 children and their families to St Katherine's at our recent Open Evening and Open Mornings - over 450 families across seven events!

A huge thank you to all our students for their musical performances, being tour guides or subject experts and to Theeban, Bea, Dylan, Freddie and Callie for their fantastic speeches at the Open Evening - you did us proud!

Year 9 student Livie has been busy creating these amazing pictures of dragons using water colours, paint and pencil. She was inspired by the descriptions and personalities of characters from the book Talon by Julie Kagawa.

Ms Tallis, Head of Art, was incredibly impressed: "Livie you have used very successful dramatic texture, displayed impressive detail and colour; the compositions are accomplished and sophisticated."

Well done Livie!

Friday 10 October was 'Hello Yellow' day. This is an annual campaign supported by YoungMinds encouraging people to wear yellow to show support for young people and their mental health.

Many of St Katherine's School staff and students joined in by wearing an item of yellow clothing or an accessory to their uniform and by making a donation to the charity. This donation will support YoungMinds in the important work they do with young people and schools, and also show support and solidarity with young people experiencing difficulty.

Year 9 scientists visit Folly Farm

On Tuesday 30th September and Wednesday 1st October the whole of Year 9 had the opportunity to go to Folly Farm to complete their biology required practical on sampling in different environments. Students were able to go into three different environments to take samples of the organisms that were present there - woodland areas for plants, pond dipping for a variety of organisms and meadow sweeping for invertebrates. Using quadrats, students measured the percentage abundance of different plants at a variety of light intensities and humidities and identified these with the help of identification charts.

The sweeping for invertebrates brought some fascinating finds as well as some interesting reactions to the insects/arachnids that were found. Some of the notable finds were a Drinker moth caterpillar, a crab spider and many green capsids amongst many others! Walking into the long grass, students chose their position and took large sweeps of the grass to try and capture as many ‘bugs’ as they possibly could to have a closer look at - only letting off the occasional scream when these flew away…....

The favourite area of the day for both sides of the year group was the pond dipping. Students managed to catch a huge variety of organisms including dragonfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae, whirligig beetles, different species of snails, various other nymphs and larvae.

Students thoroughly enjoyed identifying these organisms and were very keen to see them up close with a varied reaction to these - mainly excitement. Everyone had a great time and thankfully the weather was kind on both days! The students represented St Katherine's fantastically and the tutors from Folly Farm were very impressed with some of the answers to questions and the excellent behaviour. Overall a great experience with students learning a huge amount about an important GCSE biology topic!

Sixth Form Study Skills

On 17th September - Years 12 and 13 were off timetable for the day to focus on study skills and team building. The day began with an inspiring and motivational session from Junior Saunders, followed by a carousel of workshops covering topics such as understanding apprenticeships, effective study methods, work experience, and revision techniques led by Bath University. The day concluded with a fun and engaging subject ‘speed dating’ activity.

During the school holidays there is always lots of work taking place to make improvements to our beautiful school site.

Over the summer there were a number of upgrades to the St Katherine's Theatre; new stage lighting and controls were installed, doors were replaced throughout and the old room partition removed and replaced with a stage curtain.

We have installed over 90 smart radiator controls across the school as part of our heating sustainability project. This will help to improve heat distribution and in turn reduce our carbon footprint through a reduction in the amount of gas used to heat the school.

Over 1100 fluorescent light fittings changed to LED - with an estimated saving of 40% on our electricity bill! As part of this project seven loads of scrap metal were removed and sent to be recycled.

All four Modern Languages class rooms were re-decorated and new carpets were laid - over 100 litres of paint used across MFL, Sports and other areas!

The Sports Hall corridors and doors were re-painted, new internal doors were installed to the gymnasium and sports hall and acoustic paneling installed in the sports hall to improve the environment for PE, exams and our after school lettings.

Our sports fields were re-seeded by our new grounds contractor, Cornish Garden Services, thanks to a grant from the Football Foundation. Work to improve the soil condition and drainage has been taking place during Term 1 and will continue into Term 2. This is to enhance our outdoor facilities for our PE department and to enable us to support local football clubs.

Thanks to Mr Poulton and the site team for all their efforts over the summer and throughout the school year to make St Katherine's such a fantastic environment to study and work in.

This summer, students from St Katherine’s School embarked on an unforgettable expedition to the Atlas Mountains. The trip was divided into two phases: a project phase and a trekking phase.

During the project phase, the team worked alongside local villagers to repair damage caused by recent landslides and to improve vital road access. Their hard work made a real difference to the community and strengthened their teamwork and resilience.

In the trekking phase, the group successfully scaled Jbel Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak at 4,167 metres. The challenge brought everyone together, and the breathtaking views of the Sahara Desert and the High Atlas Mountains were a fitting reward for their effort and determination.

Afterwards, the team enjoyed some well-earned rest in Essaouira, where they cooled off in the sea breeze and explored the town’s ancient markets. The expedition was not always easy, but through every challenge the students supported one another, forged lasting friendships, and created memories that will stay with them for years to come.

We were delighted to welcome Sadik Al-Hassan, Member of Parliament for North Somerset, to St Katherine's School. - It was particularly fitting as he visited on 15th September, International Democracy Day, when our weekly theme was democracy and elections for Tutor Group Representatives were taking place.

Sadik spent time talking to students about his own background and how he became an MP. He encouraged young people to engage with local and national politics, as well as global current affairs. Sadik also met with Mr Humphreys, Headteacher, and Mr Harding, Chair of Governors.

Head student Theeban said: "It was amazing to have Sadik Al-Hassan come into school, he spoke on a lot of very interesting topics, all relevant to our current political climate, as well as sharing his own personal route into politics. Sadik was really friendly and listened and responded to everyone's questions"

On 23rd September our Year 13 biology class went to We The Curious to carry out a genetic test on themselves.

They were testing to see if they had the gene to be able to test a chemical called PTC. They used specialised lab equipment that most students won't come across until university so this was a brilliant opportunity for them to extend their lab skills and knowledge. They learned some mind-blowing facts about DNA and discovered something new about their genotype!

We The Curious staff said they hadn't seen results like these for a long time - so well done Year 13 on their precise lab skills!

IMG_3817.jpg

On 15th September students celebrated World Afro Day - a time to celebrate the beauty and heritage of Afro-textured hair. The day encourages pride, awareness, and understanding, while promoting respect for all hair types and styles.

  Sixth Form Update

There has been a new addition to the Sixth Form family this term, with Mr Davies welcoming a son back on September 26th. So in light of the all nighters, it's a 30 second update from us this month! A huge well done to our Year 12 students, who have settled in beautifully and already shown themselves to be a hard-working and conscientious year group; and another well done to our Year 13 early applicants, who got their UCAS applications away without a hitch, and with a day to spare!

Thank you to anyone who has sent well wishes for the miniature Davies (baby pictures available upon request), and I promise normal service will be resumed with a sprawling epic newsletter update next term. Enjoy the break and take care.

Roald Dahl Day 2025

On Thursday 2nd October we held the first Library event of the year, our Roald Dahl Day quiz.

Our Year 7 teams had signed up to pit their Roald Dahl knowledge against each other and the outright quiz winners were Francesca, Cara, Sophie and Bella. They all won some Roald Dahl goodies, including chocolate, of course.

The final fling (literally!) was for students to see who had the golden ticket under their chair - so Bessie won an extra chocolate bar! Huge thanks to everyone who came along to this quiz and for making it such great fun - we hope everyone who took part enjoyed their first Library event!

This is a fast-paced read with a strong eco theme and is published as a dyslexia-friendly title. Copies will be available to pre-order on ParentPay, and Alastair will be signing these, as well as the copies available to buy on the day supplied by Waterstones.

Book Buzz 2025

This wonderful project gives all our new Year 7 students the chance to choose a free book from a brilliant set of 16 titles. There is a fantastic variety to suit all interests and abilities, so there really is something for everyone! Our Year 7 students have now made their choices, and we're just waiting patiently for the books to arrive so we can all enjoy a great read.

  House Championship Term 1

Congratulations to all houses on a fantastic and energetic start to the term in the St Katherine’s House Competition! There has been incredible strength and enthusiasm shown across the board - Yousafzai shone with their creativity and skill in both baking and pumpkin carving, while Stephenson continued to demonstrate their reading excellence with Turing close on their heels. Pankhurst impressed everyone with their bottle flipping mastery, and Stephenson once again showcased their competitive edge in the Cup Stacking challenge. It’s been wonderful to see so many students getting involved, supporting their houses and showing true school spirit.

This term’s focus on Responsibility and Attendance has also brought out the best in everyone. Yousafzai tutor groups led the way in the Responsibility challenge, earning well-deserved pastries for 7Y2, 8Y, and 9Y2, with 10T1 and 11T also celebrating success as KS4 winners. Meanwhile, Pankhurst claimed the top spot in the Attendance challenge, with all houses showing fantastic improvements compared to this time last year. With Pankhurst currently leading the overall standings, Yousafzai close behind, followed by Stephenson and Turing, it’s still anyone’s game - the next term promises even more excitement, teamwork and opportunities to shine!

Mrs Humphries, Assistant Headteacher

  Pankhurst House Update

It was incredibly close throughout Term 1, but thanks to the determination and teamwork of our students, Pankhurst finished the term in 1st place - leading Yousafzai by just ten points! Every point has been hard-earned, reflecting our values of Passion, Perseverance and Pride in action. Highlights included 1st place in the Ethos competition on attendance – a reminder of how vital good attendance is for both achievement and community spirit – and 1st in the bottle flip challenge. We also achieved 2nd place in the European Day of Languages baking competition, 2nd in pumpkin carving, 2nd in both the Year 7 and 9 Reading Log competitions, and 2nd in the Roald Dahl quiz. Rounding things off were strong 3rd place finishes in the cup stacking and responsibility point competitions. A brilliant start to the year - let’s keep pushing forward into Term 2.

  Stephenson House Update

I always like to start the first newsletter of the year by welcoming our new Year 7 students. 7S are an incredible class and are setting themselves up as some of the best in the school. Callie Coleman read an inspirational speech at the open evening for Year 6 students and she was incredible. The whole class took a trip to Wales and climbed a mountain together: an unforgettable experience for everyone. I was so glad that when she said goodbye to her Year 11 tutor group in the summer, Ms Huzzey chose to re-join Stephenson House as a Year 7 tutor. She is doing such a brilliant job supporting 7S to achieve their full potential.

At the other end of the house I must mention my house leaders: Bence Sandor and Sasha Richards. They lead every house assembly and set an example for all learners in our house. Their kindness, intelligence and compassion is helping to mold the next generation of St Katherine’s students and I could not be prouder of the work they are doing.

Stephenson House has had a strong and active term, showing consistent participation across a wide range of competitions. They achieved several standout performances, including winning the Cup Stacking and multiple reading challenges such as the Reading Logs for Years 7–9 and the Bucket List task, showing their dedication to literacy and steady engagement in academic activities. While they didn’t secure as many interhouse wins as Yousafzai House, Stephenson demonstrated balance and enthusiasm across categories like Ethos and Values, earning solid points in key events. Their efforts this term reflect teamwork, reliability, and steady improvement - qualities that will help them continue to climb the leaderboard in future terms.

Finally, we wish Matthew Thomas in 8S2 the very best over the next few weeks. Matthew is an international motorcycling champion and is heading to Spain to compete in Valencia and Barcelona. Good luck Matthew! Bring home gold to St Katherine’s.

Mr Court, Head of Stephenson House

  Turing House Update

At Turing House, unity, determination, and community spirit are the foundations of our success - both in the classroom and beyond. Just as athletes give their all in a relentless game, so too does Team Turing as we launch into a new academic year. It takes energy, focus, and dedication from every student, teacher, and member of our community to achieve greatness.

A special welcome goes out to our newest members from 7T! Transitioning into a new school can be daunting, but this group has shown remarkable adaptability and enthusiasm. Their positive attitude toward lessons and their strong sense of teamwork have set a wonderful example for all. As Term 1 draws to a close, we’re thrilled to announce that 7T currently leads the way in both positive praises and attendance across all tutor groups. A fantastic start - well done!

Turning to the ongoing House Competition, Turing House has celebrated several strong performances in recent weeks. However, after last year’s tremendous victory in the 2024/25 House Championship - when the blue ribbon of Turing proudly adorned the prestigious House Cup - we find ourselves this term starting a little slower, currently sitting at the bottom of the leaderboard. This is not who we are, and it’s certainly not where we’ll stay.

The truth is, many Turing students are not yet taking part in the house competitions. The success of Turing House has always been a collective effort. Every entry, every point, and every show of house spirit matters. Whether it’s sports, arts, quizzes, reading or creative challenges, your participation makes a difference. Together, we can and will climb back to the top.

A heartfelt thank you goes to all who have already represented Turing in the European Day of Languages Baking Competition, Pumpkin Carving, and FunFixFriday events - your contributions have been outstanding, and you’ve helped set the tone for what we can achieve when we unite.

Term 2 promises an exciting lineup of competitions and opportunities to shine. I encourage every Turing student to step up, get involved and show what our house truly stands for. Remember: we are one team, one community, and our strength lies in working together.

Enjoy a well-earned break; and return ready to take on new challenges with energy, pride and determination.

“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.”

Create the Impossible! #TeamTuring

  Yousafzai House Update

It has been a truly fantastic start to the year for Yousafzai House - a term filled with competitions, achievements, and countless moments to celebrate the incredible efforts of our students.

Meeting and getting to know our new Year 7 tutor groups, 7Y1 and 7Y2, has been one of the absolute highlights of the term. The transition from primary to secondary school can be daunting, yet both groups have shown remarkable resilience, positivity and aspiration as they have settled into life at St Katherine’s. They have contributed enthusiastically to house ethos competitions and earned an outstanding number of praise points, all while setting an excellent example for the rest of the house. Their teamwork and determination in pursuit of the coveted elephant trophy has been truly inspiring.

Our older students have also risen to the occasion, demonstrating the Yousafzai values of aspiration, friendship and determination both in their lessons and around school. I am delighted to welcome our new Yousafzai Leadership Team, who have already made a positive impact by assisting with assemblies and working alongside tutor representatives to develop ideas for enhancing St Katherine’s.

Our House Leaders this year are Ava Fowler and Lara Mohan, both of whom have shown themselves to be excellent role models, demonstrating dedication, integrity and a commitment to being the best versions of themselves. Poppy Sheehan-Batchelor and Minaal Zaheer, our Deputy House Leaders, have also provided outstanding support and leadership throughout the term. I am very much looking forward to seeing what this impressive team will achieve together over the coming months.

One of my favourite parts of this term has been welcoming students to our house assemblies each week. It has been a joy to celebrate our “Marvellous Malalas” - students nominated by their tutors for showing exceptional effort, aspiration and friendship. I have heard so many wonderful stories of Yousafzai students checking in on one another, showing kindness and building resilience in the face of challenges. These moments truly capture the spirit of Yousafzai House.

Last year, Yousafzai House finished fourth in the House Championship, a statistic we are determined to change. I am delighted to say that we have had a phenomenal start to the new academic year, winning three major competitions and currently sitting in second place, just ten points behind Pankhurst.

This term, Yousafzai placed first in the Noticeboard Competition, the European Day of Languages Bake Off and the Pumpkin Decorating Competition. We also earned valuable points through our Fun Fix Friday challenges, including bottle flipping and cup stacking. It has been fantastic to see such enthusiasm and teamwork from students across all year groups, which has undoubtedly contributed to our success so far.

We also excelled in the Responsibility Competition; where 7Y2, 8Y and 9Y2 topped their year groups and were rewarded with a well-deserved pastry breakfast. However, we narrowly missed out in the Attendance Competition, finishing fourth and losing 200 potential points. This is something we are determined to improve next term, as every point counts if we are to overtake Pankhurst.

As we move into Term 2, our focus turns to attendance, punctuality and being ready to learn. These are key elements of our ethos competition, which can earn us up to 200 points. Every Yousafzai student should strive to be the best version of themselves every day - not only for their personal development but also for the success of the house as a whole.

Next term’s ethos theme is punctuality, so I encourage all students to arrive at school on time and begin each day with purpose and positivity. Parents and carers play a vital role in this, and your conversations at home about responsibility and high expectations make a significant difference to your child’s success.

Students in Years 7 to 9 should continue completing their reading logs and quizzes, while those in Years 9 and 10 are encouraged to upload their bucket list reviews to Google Classroom. We also hope to see even more students participating in competitions next term, as every contribution brings us closer to the top of the leaderboard.

It has been a real privilege to lead Yousafzai House this term. I am incredibly proud of every student for the energy, kindness and commitment they bring to our community each day. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to all parents and carers for your continued support and encouragement - it truly makes a difference.

Have a wonderful half term, and let us keep our eyes on the goal. Pankhurst, we are coming for you!

Miss Robinson, Head of Yousafzai House
