Core PE (KS3 and KS4)

At St Katherine’s students take part in a range of activities during their PE lessons. All students are engaged in two hours of high quality PE and Sport every week. Groups are generally set on ability and on health and safety considerations; they are normally single gender groups.

Examination PE (KS4 and KS5)

In Year 10, students can choose to be examined in Edexcel BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Sport (NQF). Currently this course involves 25% externally assessed examination and 75% coursework. The units are:

  • Fitness for Sport and Exercise – assessed via external examination (25%)
  • Practical Sports Performance – assessed via coursework (25%)
  • The Sports Performer in Action – assessed via coursework (25%)
  • Leading Sports Activities – assessed via coursework (25%)

In Year 12 students can choose to be examined in OCR A Level Physical Education which currently comprises:

  • Physiological factors affecting performance (30%) – examination
  • Psychological factors affecting performance (20%) – examination
  • Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport (20%) – examination
  • Practical performance in physical education (30%) – performance and coursework

More Able and Talented Students

More Able and Talented students are given a number of opportunities to develop their talents both within lessons and outside of curriculum time. In lessons students will have the opportunity to: develop higher level skills, officiate, help other students develop their skills, plan activities for themselves and others, act as captains and lead teams. Extra-curricular opportunities include a range of clubs and practices, selection for area trials, leadership courses, school team selection, leadership of school teams and House Sports Captain.

  • Year 10 & Year 11: Edexcel BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 First Award in Sport
  • Year 12 & Year 13: OCR H555 A Level Physical Education
  • Year 11 & Year 12: Sports Leadership Level 1 – Sports Leaders UK Course
