Year 9 girls inspired by International Women in Engineering Day visit

To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, local engineering consultancy Craddys, based in Ham Green, invited five of our Year 9 girls for a visit to experience many different areas of engineering.

They had to design the tallest tower from just six pieces of paper and then test them against a wind machine to see if any of them could stand it…none of them did! The girls then thought about how they could change their towers to make them more resistant with a little help from some weight and some string.

They spent the afternoon considering measures put in place to reduce flood risk, used software to work out how to build the best size road and how virtual reality technology aids engineers to design buildings.

It was an excellent experience that opened up the hugely varied world of engineering to these young ladies who now have a heightened interest in a STEM career.
