Year 9 inspired by MP's visit and public speaking...

Year 9 students were inspired to pursue their dreams when Dr. Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade and Member of Parliament for North Somerset, visited to talk about his career path.

Dr. Fox talked about his family background, telling students that his grandparents were coal miners and he went to the second biggest state school in Europe where there were over 50 students in a class.  His message was clear: if you believe in yourself and work hard, you can make your dreams a reality.

Students relished the opportunity to ask Dr Fox questions and discovered that he enjoys working with Teresa May because she is well-organised and methodical.  He also talked about why he chose politics – because if you want to make a difference in the world, you need to be in a position to do so.  As one Year 9 student said afterwards, “I feel like I can do anything now!”

The MP also led a workshop sharing his top tips to improve public speaking.  He worked with students on speeches written as part of their study of Sophocles’ Antigone which has helped them learn about the power of political language and how to articulate their beliefs.

Justin Humphreys, Head of School said:

“It was a great opportunity for students to hear Dr Fox’s story, which left them with confidence in following their own dreams and aspirations in life.  His public speaking tips were invaluable with students amazed by how their speeches came alive and had greater impact by following his advice.”

Commenting afterwards Dr Fox said he was “so impressed with the confidence, articulation, enthusiasm and aspirations” of the St Katherine’s School students.
