10 Girls Netball v Gordano

SK unlucky against Gordano as girls play high quality netball

The competition was tough in the girls first fixture of the season on Tuesday 24th January, their opponents Gordano are reigning North Somerset champions and came 2nd in last years area finals too, however the girls are no pushover and have a depth of talent and determination within their squad.

The first quarter started well, with Bo Marshall and Lauren Dun immediately connecting well in the shooting circle to put the St Kath’s side 2 – 0 up, however the Gordano side soon woke up and immediately responded with 3 goals to take the lead.  The defence of Leesha Coleman and Abbie Mogg were tested and had to be alert to the movement of the Gordano shooters.  The quarter was evenly matched and the score finished at 6 – 7 to Gordano.

St Kath’s started the 2nd quarter with much more energy and poise.  Megan Griffiths worked well in the centre with Lexie Fitzgerald and Georgia Bennett, supplying the St Kath’s shooters with plenty of possession and scoring opportunities.  The Gordano side continued to work well and remained tight in their defence, but some key interceptions by Georgia Bennett and some solid defence by Louise Thomas and Leesha ensured another close period, the goals scored were 7 a piece, leaving the score at 13 – 14 to Gordano.

Gordano started the 3rd quarter well and dominated possession, particularly centre passes, in which the St Kath’s side were struggling to regain possession.  As a result, Gordano scored a number of goals in succession and pulled away from the St Kath’s score line.  Their GA was particularly skillful and almost kept up her 100% shooting record bar one miss in this quarter.  The quarter ended 18 – 24.

The final quarter of this game saw two sides that were tired, but still determined to play to their best.  The Gordano side were still accurate in their finishing and took advantage of all scoring opportunities, however possession was much more even than the score line would suggest.  The final score finished at 22- 33 and player of the match was voted as Leesha Coleman.

The year 10 team now face Backwell in their next fixture on Wednesday 1st February.
