7 & 8 Girls Hockey v Broadoak

Double success for girl’s hockey teams at Broadoak school!

Year 7

St Kath’s 7 – 0 Broadoak

Having played a number of the larger schools locally and suffered defeats by the narrowest of margins, it was time for the girls to face a more evenly matched school, both looking for their first victory.  The 8 strong squad started the game well, maintaining possession and immediately putting the Broadoak defence under pressure.  Jolie Breakwell was formidable upfront and tackled well to keep possession.  After a great series of passes by Ella Leakey and Issy Prime, the ball broke for Jolie, who took her opportunity well and scored past the keeper with a strong strike.

The St Kath’s side wasted no time in gaining a second goal when Molly Green played a great pass through to Ella, who finished with composure to score the 2nd goal.  Not far behind on the score sheet was Issy Prime, who weaved her way past a number of defenders and found herself on a 1 on 1 with the Broadoak keeper, where she slotted the ball to the left for the 3rd goal.  Despite the score line, the defence were involved in the game supported the midfield well.  Chloe Weaden linked well with Molly on the right, as did Hetty Cleaver with Ella Leakey.  Ellie Ojo playing sweeper was outstanding and made some crucial interceptions, she also had a run through the pitch which almost resulted in a goal.  With another great effort by Issy Prime, the score at half time was 4 – 0.

The second half started well with high levels of possession for the St Kath’s side, Isobel Taylor had come into the defence and Hetty had moved into midfield, where she found herself on a great attacking position, unfortunately her shot on goal had resulted in the keeper making a save which came out high, causing her to retire injured, taking the St Kath’s side down to 6, playing the 8 of Broadoak.  It wasn’t long until the goals started flowing and Jolie added a further 2 goals with some thunderous efforts past the Broadoak keeper.  In the final minute of the game Isobel was rewarded for some excellent play with her goal to make it 7 – 0.  She was also voted as player of the match.

Year 8

St Kath’s: 4 – 0 Broadoak

St Kath’s Yr. 8 Hockey Team travelled to this fixture with 7 outfield players and no goalkeeper. Once again the team faced a team who were experienced in play on their home Astro-Turf pitch.
With 7 outfield players, this provided a really good opportunity to play attacking outfield hockey.
The team spent most of the game attacking and scored four fantastic goals as a direct result of strong, creative hockey. Goals came from Leah (1) and Molly (3) who scored a fantastic hat-trick. The goal-scorers did not steal all of the line-light as Amelie, Issie, Ruby and Chantelle played key roles in the keeper-less defence. They were controlled, organised and did very well and playing linked passes to the midfield and forwards.

A great win for the Yr. 8 Girls!!
