U15 Girls Indoor Cricket

Girls enjoy fantastic finals day at Taunton County Ground

On Friday 24th March 2017 the U15 girls attended the Somerset County Indoor Cricket Finals. This is the first final some of these girls have attended, Maisy Atkins, Ruby Webber and Jazzy Pither had previously played in 2015 in the U13’s finals at the same venue, so they knew the difficult task they had ahead, with the best of the best schools playing for the title.

St Katherine’s were also accompanied by Kingswood prep from Bath; the school that had followed them through all 3 rounds of the competition and whom had beaten them on all previous occasions, Kings College and Milford.  It was such an achievement that St Katherine’s had beaten themselves past many of the other private and state schools to be the only state school in the finals.

Jazzy opened the bowling for St Kath’s and on her third ball claimed the first wicket, however this was followed up by the new Kings batter hitting the next ball for 6.  Bo and Maisy followed for the next overs and the Kings side were beginning to amount a large total.  Fay Morris bowled the forth over, with 2 wickets to bring the game much closer, the reintroduction of Jazzy claimed a further 2 wickets but the total by Kings was a competitive 77 – 6 and a tough score for the St Kath’s side to chase.

In their first game they faced Kings College, batting first both Ruby and Lauren went into bat first, facing some fast and accurate bowling by the Kings team.  Ruby was quick off the mark, with Lauren close behind making 9 off the first 2 overs.  Ruby was first out, replaced by Bo.  After a quiet patch and the wicket of Lauren, Bo was joined by Maisy and a flurry of runs came to take the score to a respectable 40 with 3 overs left to bowl, unfortunately a quick fall of 3 wickets put an end to the St Kath’s total at 48 for 5, and handed the victory and place in the final to Kings College.

Playing in the 3rd/4th play off it was a matter of pride for the St Kath’s team, facing Kingswood prep, a side that had beaten them 3 times in the previous rounds.  Kingswood batted first and gained a very respectable 93 – 5.  This determination was clear to see from the start with Ruby making an impressive start to get the score ticking over.  The Kingswood side were clearly rattled by the prospect of the play off and began making mistakes, bowling huge numbers of wides, whilst the St Kath’s side made short work off their straight balls.  Maisy in particular scoring a 6 and a 4, then was retired for making the maximum 15 runs.  Megan and Jazzy finished off the batting in the 6th over scoring the 94th run to secure the victory and gaining the girls the 3rd spot.
