A level literature trip to Bronte country

Overlooking the wild and windswept moors of Yorkshire, the Bronte Parsonage is perched at the top of the quaint village of Haworth, abutted by a gloomy and over-crowded graveyard. A Level English literature students were thrilled to explore this iconic literary landscape in a recent residential trip.

Standing in the room where the Brontes composed their famous works, looking at the table etched with the initials of Emily, and the couch upon which it is believed she expired of pneumonia, students were thrilled to absorb the almost sepulchral atmosphere.

The Gothic theme was fittingly continued with a night in the local youth hostel, a late Victorian mansion redolent of the setting of a country house murder mystery, or a Gothic horror. Viewing ‘The Woman in Black’ in such a setting seems, in retrospect, foolhardy, as a terrified and sleepless Ms Jefferson testified the next day.

If you have never been, then go: this literary pilgrimage is a must for all who enjoy an immersive historical experience and the chance to let their imaginations run wild.
